In Arcanum, all life carries Anima.
Anima is the life force present in creatures, plants, roots, blood, soul and everything that is born, grows or dies. In its natural state, it flows through the world as raw energy, tied directly to the cycle of life.
But in some regions, that flow doesn't dissipate.
It builds up.
Ancient forests, forgotten ruins, deep caves and soils marked by great arcane concentrations can hold Anima for centuries. Over time, that life force is compressed, refined and turned into a denser, more malleable substance.
This concentrated form of Anima is known as Essence.
Essence is not just magical energy.
It is life compacted into an arcane state.
Able to bind to matter, alter natural structures and, in rare cases, awaken consciousness where before there was only stone, root or crystal.
It is from this phenomenon that the Crystallines are born.
The Birth of the Crystallines
Crystallines arise when natural crystal formations are imbued with Living Essence. This process can happen spontaneously in places where Anima has built up over long periods. The Essence seeps into the crystal, blends with its surroundings and, little by little, develops a consciousness of its own.

The birth of a Crystalline is no ordinary summoning.
Nor is it the making of an animated statue.
It is the awakening of a life formed from the union of crystal, nature and condensed life energy.
In the early stages, their bodies tend to be more fragile and translucent. The crystal structure is still forming, and the energy inside can be seen flowing like glowing veins. Over time, the body becomes more defined, tougher and more connected to the place where it was born.
Shaping Essence
Although many Crystallines are born naturally, Essence can also be manipulated by those with enough knowledge. Shapers, arcanists and scholars of the Flow have learned that Essence responds to rituals, symbols, intent and technique.
Unlike raw Anima, which is unstable and hard to control, Essence can be guided, compressed, divided and forced into new forms. Through study and magic, it's possible to shape temporary manifestations, alter existing creatures and even try to create life from inert matter.
That's why the artificial creation of life through Essence is seen by many as a practice somewhere between miracle and profanation. Among the Crystallines, the question is even more delicate: some believe their kind should be born only from the world's natural balance; others accept that Essence can be guided, as long as it is respected.
Union with Nature
Despite their crystal bodies, the Crystallines are not separate from nature. The Essence that forms them comes from the Anima built up in the environment itself. That's why each Crystalline carries traits of the place where it awakened.
To them, the environment isn't just a home.
It's part of what they're made of.
A Crystalline isn't born apart from the world. It's born from it.
The Adult Stage
As they mature, Crystallines bond more intensely with the nature around them. In their adult stage, many no longer look like mere crystal beings and begin to permanently take in living elements.
Trees may grow from their shoulders, roots may run through their legs, flowers may bloom between glowing cracks and branches may twine around their arms like natural extensions of the body.
The older the Crystalline, the harder it becomes to tell creature from environment.

Some become true living guardians of crystallized forests, caves and sanctuaries. Their presence keeps the balance between concentrated Essence and the natural world, preventing that energy from being corrupted, scattered or exploited by those who only want to shape it by force.
The Memory of Essence
Essence also carries traces of the place where it formed. Ancient wars, forgotten rituals, thousand-year-old trees, violent deaths and periods of great flourishing can leave marks on that energy. When a Crystalline awakens, some of those impressions may show in its body or behavior.
That's why many Crystallines seem to carry a wisdom older than their own birth.
They don't remember the way mortals remember.
They feel the echoes of the place that gave them life.
Some become quiet and contemplative. Others awaken restless, marked by ancient conflicts or by forces still bound to the land.
Relationship with Life and Death
For Crystallines, death isn't seen as decay, but as a return. When they die, their bodies shatter into smaller crystals. These fragments can stay in the ground for ages, feed new formations or slowly return to the flow of Anima.
In regions where Essence gathers again, it's believed these remains may help new Crystallines be born. And so their existence follows a cycle of its own:
- Anima builds up.
- It becomes Essence.
- It awakens in crystal.
- It unites with nature.
- And, one day, it returns to the world.
Traits

- Essence is a compacted, refined form of Anima.
- They have bodies made of living crystal, arcane energy and natural elements.
- They can arise naturally or be influenced by Essence shapers.
- In their adult stage, they take in trees, roots, branches, leaves, flowers and moss.
- They carry marks and memories of the place where they awakened.
- They act as natural guardians of regions where Essence builds up.
- They represent the link between life, matter, magic and nature.
Crystallines are born when life stops flowing through blood
and finds shelter in crystal.
